β blockers in hypertension and cardiovascular disease
نویسنده
چکیده
β blockers are useful in managing angina and reducing mortality after myocardial infarction and in heart failure. They probably reduce cardiovascular events in high risk surgery and retard the progression of atherosclerosis. In younger patients, β blockers should remain first line antihypertensives, together with diuretics, calcium channel blockers, angiotensin converting enzymes, and adrenergic receptor binders; choice depends on the individual case. Not all β blockers are equivalent in cardiovascular protective effects, and atenolol seems inferior to other antihypertensive drugs in reducing stroke and total mortality. Recent publications have found that β blockers are less effective than other antihypertensive drugs in preventing cardiovascular outcomes in hypertensive patients. In interpreting the new data, it is important to integrate these new results with previous trials and meta-analyses.

Neonatal hypertension is a rare and complex condition, with an incidence rate of 0.2% to 3%. It can be resulted by several risk factors such as renal diseases, use of several drugs, neurologic, cardiac, respiratory and endocrine causes. Gestational age, birth weight and conceptual age are the most important risk factors. Renal diseases can be found in about 25% to 50% of hypertension at neonata...

The role of β-adrenoceptor antagonists (β-blockers) in cardiovascular therapy has been subject to diverse trends and changes over the decades. With the advent of a wide variety of excellent drugs for the treatment of antihypertension, β-blockers have been relegated from the first-line treatment of essential hypertension. However, they remain the drugs of first choice in recommendations from the...

Although the use of β-blockers may help in achieving maximum effects of intensive glycemic control because of a decrease in the adverse effects after severe hypoglycemia, they pose a potential risk for the occurrence of severe hypoglycemia. This study aimed to evaluate whether the use of β-blockers is effective in patients with diabetes mellitus and whether its use is associated with the occurr...
